![]() Sometimes said perks will respawn lower level versions, though I suspect most abilities stack(mobility and damage up, for example), but it can be upsetting to HAVE a pentuple fools shot and see a double fools shot in your perk list. Sometimes you get perks that literally don't help your build in the least (though rare). Sometimes you go eight or nine levels without a merchant, thusly struggling through higher level stages than your guns are meant for. Most of the frustration of this game comes from, amusingly, it's rogue-lite traits. Bosses teach you game mechanics (I was stuck on boss 2 until it dawned on me I CAN FRIGGEN DODGE and I am an idiot!), movement is crisp, mobility and dodge mechanic is very well implimented. (fun fact: I once had the pentuple projectile with triple laser and didn't realize a boss had opened fire because I covered his bullets. Combine this with sometimes enemy bullets go 'under' friendly bullet sprites, and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ flamethrowers filling every nook and cranny, and all of a sudden one of this games most fun aspects (bright and shiny and good bullet dodging) becomes basically impossible. The player fires blue, green, teal and yellow, if I recall, and enemies lob purple, magenta, orange, blue and red at you. My biggest complaint here: Too many colors for bullets! Once you get bullets flying, especially out of your ship, it can get very, very difficult to pick apart. The backgrounds to stages were beautiful, and the overworld map was immersive. That said, enemeis were easy to pick apart visually after a few playthroughs and the later boss designs are absolutely wonderful (especially the playful Babushka design). Animations for banking would have been nice, but ultimately unnecessary. ![]() ![]() Visuals: Ship designs are charming, with variations on a few themes, though seeing more ships and objects would have been nice. Otherwise, an excellent soundtrack that gets really kicking later! Sound ques for attacks are usually generous, but I did have to adjust my ship's gun effects, as they were a bit loud. ![]() Sound: Music and sound effects are great. I have been playing the crap out of this game recently, and thought I would put my thoughts up here as a sort of review.Īs a kid who grew up on the greats from R-type to Ikuraga, I can say this game is pretty damn good and can scratch an itch, but could use some more polish. ![]()
